Giving Good Context — The Biggest Lever

If you've ever gotten a bland, generic answer from AI and figured the tool just isn't that good — the problem probably wasn't the tool. It was that you didn't tell it enough. Context is the single biggest lever you have, and almost nobody pulls it hard enough.

Here's the rule: the AI can only work with what you give it. Ask a thin question, get a thin answer. Feed it the real details of your situation, and the same tool suddenly sounds like it knows your business.

Why Generic Answers Happen

When you ask AI to "write a quote email" with no details, it has no choice but to invent — a made-up price, a made-up tone, a made-up job. That's where those stiff, could-be-anyone answers come from. The AI isn't failing; it's filling blanks you left empty.

Every real detail you add closes a blank. Your actual rate. Your service-call fee. The specific problem. The customer's exact words. Each one drags the answer from "generic template" toward "this is my business."

Real Numbers Beat Invented Ones

Picture a plumber in Red Deer writing a quote for a corroded water heater. The lazy version: "write a quote for a water heater replacement." The strong version: he pastes his $120 service-call fee, his $95/hour rate, and the details from the photo he took on site.

Now the email uses his numbers, not invented ones. It reads like it came from his shop, because it did. Same tool, wildly different result — and the only thing that changed was how much real context he handed over.

This is the move that turns AI from a toy into a tool: before you ask for anything, dump in the facts. Your price list. Your hours. A couple of lines you've actually written to customers before. Thirty seconds of pasting saves you ten minutes of fixing a generic draft.

What NOT to Paste

Context is powerful, so be deliberate about it. Two cautions:

First, keep private details out. You don't need a customer's full name, address, or account number to get a good draft — swap them for [CUSTOMER] or [ADDRESS] and the answer's just as good, with nothing sensitive in the chat.

Second, giving the AI your real price doesn't make its math trustworthy. If it adds up a total or calculates a rate, check the arithmetic yourself. Context feeds the words; you still own the numbers.

Do this once and you'll never go back. The answers stop sounding like a stranger's and start sounding like yours — because you finally told the tool what "yours" means.
